ATM upcycled a huge cone, which was a part of the demolished Elizabeth Hospital in Amersfoort. The cone formed a curious housing for a ventilation system and electric motors that controlled the opening and closing of a glass roof. This area is now being developed into a park by the municipality and foundation Elizabeth Groen. The leftover cone’s interesting appeal and love for area development led to ATM submitting a sketch, as seen in the first picture. One thing lead to another. The first step was to remove the existing inner construction and dents. After this, lifting eyes and transport rings were mounted, to optimize transport and further processing. Then the cone spire was blasted and dezinced in the largest dezincification bath in the Netherlands. After this treatment, the damaged side was restored and then it was ready to be modified! A ring of IPE 300 steel was welded to the cone. 22 connectors are welded to this, with three bolt holes each, to which wooden beams were attached with black M24 bolts. The 22 Douglas beams all have their own length and angle at which they were cut. This was done by using a laser. Three bolt holes were drilled and countersunk at both ends. On the other end of the beams there were more connectors welded to the ellipse shaped base. This ellipse was cut from 15 mm thick steel and provided with a raised edge: 185 x 15 mm. Here the reinforcement was welded and later the concrete was poured. After this, the concrete was poured according to color (basalt), vibrated and levelled. After curing, the concrete is ground, resulting in a natural appearance. By laying the concrete, the center of gravity will have moved to above the base plate, thus the Stelcon plates and bracket could be removed. Parallel to this work, the “universe pattern” was cut out manually with a plasma cutter.
